— SophoclesDid you know that today is First White House Wedding Day? Yes, it’s true! In 1812, President James Madison’s sister-in-law Lucy Payne Washington tied the knot with Supreme Court Justice Thomas Dodd in what would be the first of many White House weddings to come. And why not? The White House is the perfect place for a romantic ceremony. You’ve got the beautiful architecture, the manicured gardens, and the constant threat of secret service agents lurking in the bushes. What could be more romantic?
Of course, planning a White House wedding isn’t without its challenges. You’ve got to deal with all sorts of logistical issues, like security clearance for your guests and making sure the First Lady approves of your choice of floral arrangements. And don’t even get me started on the seating chart. Trying to decide whether to put the Vice President next to the bride’s aunt or the Secretary of State is enough to make even the most organized bridezilla break out in hives.
But despite all the stress and chaos, there’s something undeniably magical about a White House wedding. Maybe it’s the sense of history and tradition, or maybe it’s just the fact that you’re getting married in the same room where Abraham Lincoln once ate a sandwich. Whatever the reason, it’s a day that you’ll never forget.
Free verse poem:
The White House, decked in flowers and lace A perfect setting for a wedding’s grace Lucy Payne Washington, dressed in white Her groom, Supreme Court Justice, stood in delight
The first of nineteen, a tradition began The President’s house, a venue grand Security clearances and guest lists made The perfect day, no detail mislaid
A place of power and history too A White House wedding, a dream come true A day to cherish, forever and more Love in the White House, what could be more?
Limerick:
There once was a bride, Lucy Payne Whose wedding caused quite a big stir She married in the White House As a mouse crept about, quite douse But her groom, Justice Dodd, made it a blur
Haiku:
White House wedding bells A moment in history Love conquers all, still.
