In 1812, President James Madison’s sister-in-law Lucy Payne Washington tied the knot with Supreme Court Justice Thomas Dodd in what would be the first of many White House weddings to come. And why not? The White House is the perfect place for a romantic ceremony. You’ve got the beautiful architecture, the manicured gardens, and the constant threat of secret service agents lurking in the bushes. What could be more romantic?

Of course, planning a White House wedding isn’t without its challenges. You’ve got to deal with all sorts of logistical issues, like security clearance for your guests and making sure the First Lady approves of your choice of floral arrangements. And don’t even get me started on the seating chart. Trying to decide whether to put the Vice President next to the bride’s aunt or the Secretary of State is enough to make even the most organized bridezilla break out in hives.
